Making the Right Choice Under Pressure

Sierra came in for a pregnancy test after taking a couple at home. Confirming her home tests, the Pregnancy Resource Center test returned a positive result. Sierra seemed ok with the unplanned pregnancy and her boyfriend was acting like the result was ok as well. Sierra scheduled an ultrasound 1 week later when she would be six weeks pregnant.

At six weeks, the baby's heart beat is detectable on the ultrasound.

When she returned for her ultrasound, Sierra revealed that she was seeking an abortion. After speaking with her parents and having further discussion with her boyfriend, she decided she would abort her baby. She said that her relationship with her boyfriend “wasn’t great” and that her parents said this isn't the right time for her to have a baby.

Sierra stated, “I know I’m killing my baby, but it’s the best thing for me and the baby.” The counselor asked Sierra for permission to challenger her on that statement and how it would be best for the baby to kill the baby. Sierra didn’t have an answer. Sierra started to tear up. The Counselor reminded Sierra that it was her decision and she needs to be comfortable with the decision.

Sierra had the ultrasound but did not want picture. After her ultrasound, Sierra stated she still had to have the abortion. The volunteer peer counselor gave her post-abortion information and told her to come back if she experiences any of the feelings listed in the brochure after she has her abortion.

About a week later, Sierra called the Center asking for a picture of the ultrasound. Ultrasonographer printed one and left it at the front desk. Two weeks later, the picture was still there. The Client Services Director called Sierra to find out if she still wanted picture. Sierra stated she forgot that she had asked for it.

During the discussion it was revealed Sierra was still pregnant and was waiting for her Medicaid to kick in to go to the doctor. Sierra was invited to come in that day for another ultrasound and was very excited to see how the baby has developed. Sierra will return next week to begin the “Earn While You Learn” parenting skills development program.

Please enjoy these pictures of Sierra's nine week old baby safely growing in her mothers tummy.
In this ultrasound picture you can clearly see the head, body, arms, legs, and a hand that appears to be giving a high five.
